Because God Gave Me a Daughter

My aunt would point out the cellulite on my prepubescent thighs. And I learned what little girls don't need to hear because God would give me a daughter.

I saw violence and said goodbye to my father over and over again. I learned the importance of stability because God would give me a daughter.

I suffered the consequences of chasing boys and not my dreams. Because God would give me a daughter.

I gave myself to men who didn't respect me because people assumed I didn't need to be told what not to do. I learned the importance of affirming women's value because God would give me a daughter.

I was harassed and made uncomfortable by men too numerous to count. I know the importance of raising my voice and being firm in my boundaries because God would give me a daughter.

I learned these lessons the hard way, never knowing I was learning for someone else. Because God would give me a daughter.

I asked, "Why me?" more times than I can count, and I didn't get the answer for 26 years until she was born.

I know it's tempting to tear out the messy pages, but your life is a chapter in someone else's story. Let those experiences shape and inform a world outside of your own.

God will give you something.
